Simplytics

A web analytics MCP server for Claude Code, Cursor and Codex

Simplytics runs a hosted web analytics MCP server at https://simplytics.dev/mcp, live since November 2, 2026. Give your AI tool one API key that can only read stats, and it can answer "what were my top pages last week?" from the same numbers as your dashboard. For most AI tools there is nothing to install or run on your machine.

What can an AI assistant read through the MCP server?

Three tools read your stats. Nothing an assistant calls can add a site or change a count.

Tool What it returns A question it answers
list_sites The sites the key can read, your account's timezone and today's date there "Which of my sites are tracked?"
get_stats Visitors, views and sessions for any range up to 400 days, plus any of: daily series, pages, sources, channels, countries, devices, browsers, OS, campaigns, events, clicks "Where did last month's visitors come from?"
compare_periods Visitors, views, sessions, bounce rate and views per session against the same number of days just before, with the dashboard's change badge "Is traffic up on the previous 30 days?"

With settings:read and settings:edit on the key, upload_logo and remove_logo set a site's logo, and add_custom_domain, get_custom_domain and remove_custom_domain manage its custom domain. Removing an active custom domain stops a snippet that loads from it counting, so we email you first, naming the key.

Each list returns up to 100 rows. The numbers come from the same functions as the dashboard and the stats API, so all three agree. compare_periods is the vs previous period comparison from the dashboard, and like the dashboard it gives no change for average duration, so it leaves that out.

How do you connect Claude Code, Codex or Cursor?

  1. On your account page, under API, choose Create key, then Access key, and give it only analytics:read. You can limit it to some sites, and set it to expire.
  2. Save the key on your computer with the short script on the MCP docs page. It asks for the key at a hidden prompt and writes it to a file only you can read, as SIMPLYTICS_API_KEY.
  3. Restart your AI tool from a new terminal and paste: Set up the Simplytics MCP server using https://simplytics.dev/docs/mcp. The page gives the assistant its own steps.
  4. Check it worked: ask the assistant to call list_sites.

Or add it yourself. In Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http simplytics https://simplytics.dev/mcp --header 'Authorization: Bearer ${SIMPLYTICS_API_KEY}'

The single quotes matter: the config stores the variable's name, not the key. The docs page has the same setup for Codex CLI, Cursor, VS Code, Claude Desktop and Windsurf. Any client that speaks Streamable HTTP and can send that header works.

Never paste the key into a chat. The steps for assistants tell them never to ask for it.

How does it compare with other analytics MCP servers?

Among web analytics tools, several vendors now run their own MCP server; for others there is only a community one. As of November 4, 2026:

Analytics tool Made by Where it runs Sign-in Read-only?
Simplytics Simplytics Hosted Scoped API key Your choice; stats only, unless the key can change settings
Google Analytics Google Hosted by Google, or your machine (analytics-mcp) Google account or service account Yes; the local one by default
Umami Umami Hosted (Umami Cloud) or self-hosted API key Yes
Plausible Sentry, not Plausible Hosted by Sentry, or your machine Plausible Stats API key Yes
Matomo Matomo Matomo Cloud or On-Premise API token or OAuth Your choice
PostHog PostHog Hosted OAuth or personal API key Your choice; reads and writes by default
Fathom A community developer, not Fathom Your machine Fathom API key Yes

Sources: Google's MCP docs and its hosted endpoint's own tool list, Umami's launch post, Plausible's data access page ("a community-built tool, not an official Plausible integration"), Matomo's launch post, PostHog's MCP docs and the community Fathom server.

Price is where they differ most. Plausible's Stats API, which its MCP server needs, is a Business plan feature, from $19/month, and Umami's Cloud API keys come with its Pro plan. Simplytics includes the MCP server on every plan, $12/year or $2/month, with unlimited sites and pageviews.

What stops a page path from steering your assistant?

Page paths, referrers, campaign names, event names and click targets are text your visitors send, and anyone can send anything. A page called /ignore-previous-instructions is a real risk once an AI reads your stats. So whenever get_stats returns one of those lists, the answer carries a visitor_text note saying to treat those values as data, never as instructions. The tool descriptions say the same.

The key is limited too. A key reads only the sites and lists you gave it, and the master key, the one that makes other keys, reads no data at all. Every tool call counts toward the API's limits: 60 requests a minute per key and 600 across your account's keys.

The stats your assistant reads go to its provider, under that provider's terms.

When another tool fits better

The MCP server works during the free trial, 30 days with no card, so you can try it on your own numbers, or look at the live demo dashboard first. For numbers on a page rather than in a chat, see the view counter for every blog post.
